BMW i3 and BMW i3 Range Extender

BMW i3 Car Insurance

The i3 represents BMW’s first foray into the world of electric cars.

The BMW i3 was originally launched in 2013 with two versions - the standard electric powered model for which a 60Ah battery afforded a range of around 80-100 miles and a range extender model which has a 650cc two-cylinder engine that provides power for the electric motor and extends the range to 180 miles. The convenience of the extra range meant an additional £3,000 but despite this the i3 remained competitively priced alongside its rivals.

The i3 received plaudits for its handling, ride quality and speed, the latter aided in no small part by its low weight carbon fibre body propelled by an electric motor generating 170 PS.

The cost of the battery was included in the cost of the car i.e. it isn’t leased as is the case with some of its competitors.

The i3 went on to claim the UK Car of the year 2014 award and the title of Green Car of the Year by WhatCar.

BMW i3 Extender Car Insurance

July 2016 saw the introduction of the 94Ah battery on both the BMW i3 and the BMW i3 Range Extender models. The higher storage density of the lithium ion cells increases its range by more than 50 per cent to 195 miles. Peace of mind comes from that fact that the battery has been designed to last for the car’s entire service life with customers receiving an 8-year or 100,000 mile warranty on the battery. DC Rapid-charge comes as standard whilst AC charging is now multi-phase allowing. As a result, the charging time for the BMW i3 (94Ah) is less than three hours, and the latest BMW i3 can also be charged at home using a standard three-pin plug or by specifying a BMW i Wallbox.

The i3 can reach 62mph in just 7.3 seconds making the BMW i3 both the sportiest and most efficient electric vehicle in its segment.

BMW claims the i3 is the most economical electrically powered car of its size and output class with the low cost per mile equating to running a diesel engine and achieving 470.8mpg.

For even greater range, the Range Extender remains an attractive option. As soon as the charging level of the lithium ion batteries drops to a certain level, the Range Extender comes into play to extend the range by 81 miles without compromising on luggage space in the boot.

The BMW i3 94Ah comes in Protonic Blue with Frozen Grey metallic highlight and the choice of several new interior trims. The on the road price for the BMW i3 £27,830 whilst the Range Extender is £30,980 (both prices include the £4,500 OLEV Government Grant.
