Makes And Models

pluginsure are pleased to share with you our list of some of the most commonly available makes and models of electric cars, vans and trucks on the roads in the UK today. Of course we've also added a few of the less commonly available electric vehicles for good measure. We'd like you to pay special attention to those marked with an asterisk (*) as those are the vehicles we can insure through our very own electric car insurance scheme!

Smart Electric Drive*

The smart fortwo coupé and smart fortwo cabrio enjoy a range of 90 miles on a full-charge, seats for two passengers and an ample boot.

The motor, powered by a 17.6kWh battery, delivers 74bhp and a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds reaching an eventual top speed of 78mph. Recharge time is 8 hours and gives an 84 mile maximum range – if you’re in a hurry then an 80% recharge can be accomplished in 3 hours.

Peugeot iON* / Mitsubishi i-MiEV* / Citroen C-ZERO*

Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi took the strategic decision to join together and create a single shared platform thereby increasing the speed of development and reducing costs. This partnership resulted in the creation of the Peugeot iON, Mitsubishi i-Miev and Citroen C-Zero.

Tall and narrow, up to four occupants (two in the front and two in the rear) are afforded plenty of room; this is complemented by ample boot space for the weekly shop.

The car’s 64bhp electric motor will get you from 0-30mph 5.9 seconds and allows it to reach 81mph. Recharging takes place via a typical household electrical outlet. Its 16kWh lithium-ion battery pack can be fully charged in around 7 hours which translates into a range of up to 93 miles. Comfort and safety features comprise power steering, ABS, ESP, power windows, airbags and air conditioning; entertainment comes in the form of a CD stereo, Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port with other options including satellite navigation, a heated driver's seat and heated door mirrors.

We're pleased to say that electric car insurance for each of these electric cars is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

Nissan Leaf*

One of the most popular models currently available, the Nissan Leaf’s electric motor gives the equivalent of 108bhp with 280Nm of instantly available torque providing rapid acceleration and a top speed of 89mph. The 100 miles range is attained largely through the use of ‘eco’ mode; full charging from a standard household socket takes eight hours but an electric vehicle charging point can give 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes. Nissan estimates annual electricity bills for the Leaf would amount to £257 and each full charge coming in at just £2.

The Nissan leaf is flexible with plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustments. With the lithium-ion battery pack is located in the floor, the interior is spacious meaning the Leaf can comfortably seat five people who in turn enjoy copious head and legroom; boot space isn’t sacrificed with 330 litres of room available. Additional features include automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, satellite navigation and remote battery monitoring.

Peace of mind comes from a three-year (or 60,000-mile) warranty for standard parts and five years’ cover for major components e.g. the lithium-ion battery and electric motor.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Nissan Leaf is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

Renault Fluence Z.E.*

The stylish five-seat, four-door Fluence Z.E. saloon is keenly priced, undercutting it’s diesel counterparts. To give peace of mind when it comes to battery maintenance and technology, as well as keep this initial cost low, there is a separate battery lease contract from £75 per month (based on 6,000 miles per year/3 years).

The initial launch version of Fluence Z.E.,the Prime Time, is well-equipped, including 16” alloy wheels climate control, cruise control, ecoMeter and satellite navigation; charging sockets are available on both front wings.

Tesla Roadster

Originally priced from £94,000 on the road, the Tesla range includes the Signature Edition Roadster model and the more powerful Roadster Sport.

An eye-catching sports car which outmatched petrol-based rivals on its Top Gear debut, is the first electric vehicle to travel more than 200 miles on a single charge and the first ever EU and US-certified lithium ion battery electric vehicle. The Roadster attains the equivalent of 256 miles per gallon and travels more than 240 miles on a single charge.

Tesla Model S

Buyers of the Tesla Model S can choose from either the four-wheel drive Model S 70D, with a 70kWh battery and two electric motors, giving a claimed range of 275 miles or the rear-drive Model S 85, which has 85kWh battery offering a claimed range of 310 miles. Range anxiety is reduced with the energy flow data provided to the driver from the car.

Tesla’s Supercharger network can recharge a flat battery to half full in less than thirty minutes. Tesla is committed to expanding this network of free to use chargers (exclusive to Tesla owners). The car’s energy flow data keeps the driver aware of battery use thus limiting range anxiety . Furthermore, the 7,000-cell Panasonic battery incorporated into the floorplan provides mass low down and therefore stability. Tesla provides buyers with an eight-year, unlimited-mileage warranty on the battery. The car itself is covered for four years and 50,000 miles (transferable between owners).

The entry-level 70D can accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds, while the high-performance P85D is super car-like, with a 0-60mph time of 3.1 seconds and an “Insane” setting. The car comes with keyless entry, a 17-inch touch screen on the dash (and another TFT screen in the instrument cluster) as well as a multi-function steering wheel. Options include a full-length sunroof, LED cabin lighting, rear-facing jump seats and a high-fidelity stereo.

Without those jump seats there is 894 litres of luggage space. With the back seats folded down this rises to 1,645 litres. Extra storage is also available in the nose.

Company car tax is at 5% making it comparable with a compact hatchback.

Renault Zoe*

The Renault Zoe boasts an electric motor producing 89PS and 219Nm, with a maximum range of 130 miles between charges. Recent reviews, however, have suggested that a realistic range for the vehicle is approximately 90 miles in good conditions.

Further technology with which the vehicle is equipped includes regenerative braking and a heater system which does not diminish the car's range. The Zoe also has a 'voice' system that allows the otherwise silent car to be heard by pedestrians and R-Link, which allows drivers to access data and operate certain functions remotely from their phone with even charging able to be turned on and off remotely.

The Michelin Energy Saver EV tyres (designed specifically for electric vehicles) fitted to the Zoe reduces rolling resistance and are well placed to withstand the immediate torque delivery unique to electric motors. Its strikingly named Chameleon charger reduces battery damage and purports to allow the car to charge in just an hour. It should be noted that a wallbox is required to charge the Zoe as it will not charge from a standard household three-pin socket.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Renault Zoe is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

BMW i3*

The i3 represents BMW’s first foray into the world of electric cars. There are, however, two versions of the i3 available - the standard electric powered model with a range of around 80-100 miles and a range extender model which has a 650cc two-cylinder engine that provides power for the electric motor and extends the range to 180 miles. The convenience of the extra range comes with a price tag of an additional £3,000 but despite this the i3 remains competitively priced alongside its rivals.

The i3 has received plaudits for its handling, ride quality and speed, the latter aided in no small part by its low weight carbon fibre body propelled by an electric motor generating 170 PS.

One important thing for prospective i3 buyers to note is that the cost of the battery is included in the cost of the car i.e. it isn’t leased as is the case with some of its competitors.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your BMW i3 is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

BMW i8*

The i8, the "other" electric car in BMW’s electric vehicle range, is not a pure electric vehicle in that it is is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine combined with a 129bhp electric motor linked to lithium-ion batteries.

This hybrid powertrain produces 357bhp and 570Nm of torque and is able to go from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. Despite these supercar-esque figu res, BMW claims the i8 returns 134.5mpg and CO2 emissions of just 49g/km. The BMW i8’s 32-litre fuel tank allows it to cover just over 300 miles on a full charge and with a full tank. A domestic power socket affords an 80 percent charge in around three hours, reduced to two hours with a BMW home charging station, while BMW’s £315 15-amp iWallbox reduces the charge time to two hours. Company car buyers will also benefit, with the i8 currently sitting in a For 9% BIK band which will move up to an 11% band next year (2016-2017).

The BMW i8 boasts a high specification with scissor doors, narrow LED headlights (optionally available with laser technology), sat-nav, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and heated leather-finished seats. Although being a 2+2, reviews have indicated there is little room in the rear of the car.

An added extra for BMW i8 owners is the option, provided by BMW, of borrowing a traditional BMW for longer journeys or family holidays.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your BMW i8 is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer and those looking for a high net worth electric car insurance policy can also check out our "LUXE" package. Kia Soul EV*

This is Kia's first production electric vehicle comes with a market-first seven-year warranty.

The 109bhp, 210lb ft electric motor drives a single-speed transmission. Kia claims a 0-60mph time of 10.8sec and a top speed of 90mph.

Although its 27kWh lithium ion polymer battery pack can take up to 13 hours to charge from a UK domestic socket, Kia UK is supplying owners with a wallbox charger to at least halve that time. A fast-charging socket can also deliver an 80 per cent charge in just over half an hour.

The clever engineers at Kia have also developed a low-energy heating and ventilations system which also allows heating and ventilation to be restricted to just the driver, saving energy. The combination of the polymer battery cells and the new heating system will stretch the potential driving range out to 132 miles.

Reviewers have confirmed that the Kia Soul EV delivers smooth performance and a quiet cabin, the trademark qualities of modern electric cars.

To buy one you will find yourself paying £24,995 (including government grant, battery pack, wall charger, Chargemaster account).

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Kia Soul EV is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Mercedes Benz B-Class Electric Drive*

The Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive is based on its standard production car but with the addition of some smart engineering work.

One of these innovations is the “sandwich” floor arrangement called “Energy Space” which in simple terms means the rear part of the floor is raised and the underfloor is lowered. This creates a gap into which the battery is fitted.

The Electric Drive also rides 40mm higher at the front and 43 mm at the rear than its combustion powered counterpart and comes with 18-inch alloys.

Interior comforts include man-made “Artico” leather (with blue stitching) seats and an eight-inch multimedia screen.

Three driving modes are available on the Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive which are Economy, Economy Plus and Sport, the latter of which makes the most of the 178bhp available to the car. This powertrain was originally developed in conjunction with Tesla (although Mercedes has sold its stake in the American firm since our drive) with a range of around 124 miles.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Mercedes Benx B-Class Electric Drive is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Ford Focus Electric*

The Ford Focus Electric is Ford’s first electric production model.

The car’s 143bhp electric motor is connected to two batteries affording a range of around 100 miles on a full charge and taking the car from 0-62mph in 11 seconds. A cable for charging from a normal household socket is included with the car, but a high-voltage version for use with 32A public charging points is available for an extra cost.

Inside the Focus Electric comes with a high-spec Titanium trim level including part-leather seats, Sony DAB digital radio, sat-nav and cruise control.

Other standard equipment includes keyless entry, electric mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and automatic headlights. Rear parking sensors are available at an extra cost.

Even at speeds of up to 85mph the car remains virtually silent with the exception of any wind and road noise.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Ford Focus Electric is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

Vauxhall Ampera*

Vauxhall offers two Ampera models in the UK: the Positiv and the Electron.

Not a conventional pure electric car, the Ampera is powered by a 85bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and a 148bhp electric motor (the electric motor has an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty). This combination means that it is able to return fuel economy of up to 235mpg and CO2 emissions of only 27g/km.

Every Ampera comes with two seven-inch displays, 17 inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera and a DAB radio fitted as standard. An electric parking brake means there is space for cup-holders and an armrest in the front of the vehicle which has four individual seats. A nice innovation from Vauxhall is a pedestrian alert buzzer, which can warn passers-by of the car’s presence when travelling below 30mph in full electric mode.

Vauxhall claims that its pure electric motor has a range of up to 50 miles, at which point the petrol engine increases the total range to more than 300 miles. A full charge will take four hours.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Vauxhall Ampera is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

e-Golf*

The first ever electric Golf, the front wheel drive e-Golf is propelled by a 114bhp electric motor fed by a 24.2kW lithium ion battery. The e-Golf’s top speed is 87mph and it can go from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Interestingly, its time of 4.2 seconds from 0-37mph is quicker than a Golf GTI.

A conventional Golf adapted for electric power, VW claims a range of 118 miles on a single charge (although reviews have indicated that the reality is a rather less than this) and to maximise this range, the e-Golf has three driving modes – Normal, Eco and Eco+ – as well as regenerative braking.

The e-Golf can be 80 per cent fast-charged in just 30 minutes. A full charge takes 13 hours from a domestic socket.

Specification-wise, the e-Golf offers LED headlights, a rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the e-Golf is a 5.7-inch touchscreen infotainment centre, climate control, electric mirrors and adaptive cruise control.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Volkswagen e-Golf is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.

e-up!*

Volkswagen’s first production electric vehicle, with 81bhp and 210Nm of torque, the VW’s electric motor propels the e-up! from 0-60mph in just 10.3 seconds and provides an 80mph top speed. To slow down, the e-up! Provides five levels of regenerative braking.

The e-up! has those five levels of braking in common with the e-Golf and the similarities do not stop there as it also comes with C-shaped daytime running lights. Aero-optimised 15-inch alloys adorn the wheels.

Volkswagen claims the e-up! will cover between 70 and 90 miles on a full charge, depending on your driving style and use of interior comforts. From a domestic 230v socket, a full charge will take less than nine hours, whilst the optional domestic wall box will reduce the charge time to six hours.

The e-up! also has a seven-pin charger for public fast charging points to obtain an 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes.

The standard e-up! has a five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP and comes with City Emergency Braking.

We're pleased to say that insurance for your Volkswagen e-up! is available through pluginsure's recently announced electric car insurance offer. Remember, our electric car insurance offer is underwritten by the UK's third largest insurer (Ageas) and you won't find our rates anywhere else as they're exclusively available by calling us on 0330 043 1962.
